Catch 22 is about the situation where pilots in WW II can not avoid flying because of insanity reaons, since only insane person would like to fly an airplane while somebody is trying to shoot you down. And thus, their insanity is in fact a proof of their sanity. A somewhat simple diagonalization argument... ;)

Posted by AnonymousAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6555947.post-1122569957758317912005-07-28T10:59:00.000-06:002005-07-28T10:59:00.000-06:00Excuse me for my ignorance, but can someone tell m...Excuse me for my ignorance, but can someone tell me who is Joseph Heller ?

Posted by AnonymousAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6555947.post-1122446187254111672005-07-27T00:36:00.000-06:002005-07-27T00:36:00.000-06:00Yajun, perhaps this will help explain:http://www.m...Yajun, perhaps this will help explain:

http://www.masalatime.com/feat128.htm

Posted by AnonAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6555947.post-1122442029787832522005-07-26T23:27:00.000-06:002005-07-26T23:27:00.000-06:00It always confuses me what the US want. As a student from mainland China, I know a lot of suffering from visa stuffs about all my classmates heading for US.

Just as mentioned above, the US consulate asks you whether you will stay in US after graduation. What are they expecting? How would you promising something 4 or 5 years later in the future? Frankly, I would faithfull answer: "I dont know". But all my classmates said they will come back to China after study. They are forced to lie, because they never know what they will do after years!

Put it in other way, if US does not want those students working in the States, just denies any working visas LATER. Why stop them in the first place with non-sense reasons?

I do not understand.

Posted by YajunAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6555947.post-1122439096709032072005-07-26T22:38:00.000-06:002005-07-26T22:38:00.000-06:00From what I was told a long time ago, the State De...From what I was told a long time ago, the State Department is required to ask F-1 applicants if they intend to live in the US, because of Congressional mandate. This is confusing, but not overly so, if you recognize that the F-1 visa is given for studies, and there are other visas to actually work in the US.

I doubt any university cares whether a graduating Ph.D works in the US...

Posted by SureshAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6555947.post-1122438262645499992005-07-26T22:24:00.000-06:002005-07-26T22:24:00.000-06:00And here is the part that I can't understand: assu...And here is the part that I can't understand: assuming these are PhD students, US may actually want them to stay here to teach and do research, but the embassy sometimes makes sure they declare that they do not intend to get a job in the US before they can come back to continue their PhD... I really have no idea how I should have answered that question back then. I blame my then poor (and still poor) English comprehension.

Posted by AnonymousAnonymousnoreply@blogger.com
