I liked the puzzle-mystery distinction as well, but I find myself unable to buy his defence of the Enron guys. By his logic, it would be perfectly ok if public companies started publishing their annual reports encrypted using a weak encryption, so that it would be the analysts' fault if they are unable to solve the mystery. Of course the board has access to the true data so they can predict exactly what the analysts will conclude when they succeed in decrypting the data and thus predict the market! All this while, the employees are of course unaware that the company, along with their retirement savings, is going into the ground, since the upper management continues to talk about how well the war, oops I mean the company is doing.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
