I can add to the already perfect post that Lars was the coolest, most awesome dad - he was truly the entire package. He taught me so much about life and how to act in specific situations. Much of my identity can be traced back to him. He was truly ego-free having protected my family in life and even now having prepared emails about how to deal with the current situation - step by step in a logical fashion. I suppose Lars has always been able to plan anything to perfection even considering how uncontrollable the situation was. Lars was an amazing researcher and person. I met him first when I was a clueless graduate student at Duke University who was not sure what I wanted to do in research. My first course at Duke was the Algorithm class with him. He was energetic, witty and made the class really fun. I was fortunate to know him better later at Duke. In addition to being a great researcher, he was a wonderful human being: warm, passionate about life, and always ready to help. He was the professor that I always felt comfortable to simply drop by his office and talk about things, be it just random chats or my struggles, and his door was always open. I viewed him both as a mentor and a friend. This is just a weird way to restate the fact that there are many more TCS PhD students than there are FOCS PC members, and that most people don\u0026#39;t have that many PhD students. But a large fraction of these students also would not submit to FOCS, so we are not saying very much with this statement, are we? To get a meaningful statement, you need to condition on students who have results that are publishable in FOCS, and then the chances would look, I conjecture, differently. To CS Prof this is simply evidence of bias, because they apparently live in a world where the quality of a student\u0026#39;s work is independent of their advisor being invited to multiple PCs. But even in an ideally unbiased world, you would like the PC to consist of active people doing cutting edge work, and they would do that work with their students.
