TheoryFest at STOC 2017.

(ed: I can't believe it's been four months since my last post. Granted, I've been posting over at algorithmicfairness.wordpress.com, but still. Time to turn in my theory card...)

One of the things I've been doing is helping out with the STOC TheoryFest this summer. Specifically, I've been on the plenary talks committee that was tasked with identifying interesting papers from other parts of CS and beyond that might be interesting for a STOC audience to hear about. After many months of deliberations, we're finally done! Boaz has more details over at his blog.

Do take a look at the papers. Boaz has a great summary for each paper, as well as links to the sources. You'll see a pretty decent coverage of different topics in CS, including even some theory B !!

But more importantly, please do register for STOC! This year, the organizers are making a real effort to restructure the conference to make it more accessible with a diversity of events like the plenary talks, tutorials, and workshops, and there should be something for everyone. Early registration ends on May 21, so click that link now.

In this day and age, I don't need to emphasize the importance of standing up and being counted. If you've ever grumbled about the old and stultifying format of STOC, this is your chance to vote with your feet. A big success for TheoryFest 2017 will surely encourage more along these lines in future years.

SoCG-STOC Joint Workshops Call

As you all might know, in an event sure to get someone a Nobel Peace Prize, the Symposium on Computational Geometry (SoCG) and the Symposium on the Theory of Computing (STOC) will "sympose" together in Boston this year.

As part of this peace offensive designed to unite points and graphs, the combinatorial and the geometric, the Laplacian and the Hilbertian, (someone please stop me now...), there will be a day of overlap between the two conferences. The intention is to have a day of workshops on topics of interest to both communities, as well as two invited talks (by Timothy Chan and Santosh Vempala).

I'm one of the co-organizers of this joint day of workshops (together with Yusu Wang, Chandra Chekuri and Alex Andoni). And I strongly encourage you to consider putting together a proposal for a workshop/tutorial/other event that brings together folks from these communities.

For more details, please visit the workshops page. The deadline for submitting proposals is Feb 22, 2016. Proposals do not need to be very long - they merely need to answer specific questions as detailed in the CFP.

This is a great opportunity to expose the communities to topics that they might not ordinarily bump into, but could enjoy and benefit from. I'm very excited to see what ideas get tossed around, and am looking forward to the event. Kudos to the STOC and SoCG steering committees for making this happen.

STOC 2015 Call for Workshops and Tutorials

I've had two week from hell with proposal deadlines, paper deadlines, faculty candidates and ever-more demanding hungry cries of the baby chickadees  meetings with my students.

Thankfully, all that is now in the past and I can sally forth to the next deadline. Which is, you ask ?

STOC 2015 will have a workshops and tutorials day on Sunday June 14, the day before the conference starts. +Sanjeev Khanna and +Chandra Chekuri are running the event, and they want your proposals.
We invite groups of interested researchers to submit workshop or tutorial proposals. The goal of a workshop is to provide an informal forum for researchers to discuss important research questions, directions, and challenges. Connections between theoretical computer science and other areas, topics that are not well represented at STOC, and open problems are encouraged as workshop topics. Organizers are completely free to choose their workshop formats (invited speakers, panel discussions, etc.). The program for June 14th may also involve tutorials, each consisting of 1-2 survey talks on a particular area, and we welcome tutorial proposals as well.
Deadline for submissions is Mar 15, 2015. For more details on the format etc, visit the workshops/tutorials page

STOC 2014 announcement.

Howard Karloff writes in to remind everyone that the STOC 2014 early registration deadline is coming up soon (Apr 30 !). Please make sure to register early and often (ok maybe not the last part). There will be tutorials ! workshops ! posters ! papers ! and an off-off-Broadway production of Let It Go, a tragicomic musical about Dick Lipton's doomed effort to stop working on proving P = NP.

At least a constant fraction of the above statements are true.

STOC 2011 Poster Session

STOC 2011 is experimenting with a poster session. This is excellent news - kudos to the organizing committee for taking the initiative to do this.

What I'm a little puzzled about is the format though: rather than the usual  "some papers become posters" or "all papers get a slot in the poster session", the format appears to be "submit posters about other, possibly published, work". This is a nice idea, and should help with dissemination of results from other venues, and drawing more folks into the conference. However, priority in poster acceptance will be given to registered STOC attendees, which doesn't do much for the participation numbers.

But I complain too much. This is a nice step forward, and I encourage people to submit their posters. Unfortunately, (fortunately?) I'll be in Paris instead of San Jose.

The Future of STOC

Lance has now created a blog, 'The future of STOC', where he's been posting responses from people who were asked to comment on the original proposal for modifying STOC. The responses are almost unanimously negative and make for interesting reading.


My response is linked there as a PDF: I thought I'd place the main text here, just to solicit some comments. After writing this, I've done some digging for data (which will hopefully appear in a post shortly) that brings up an interesting angle to the 'accept more papers' discussion.
My response: This is a terrible way of solving the problem, because...
There are better solutions!

It is puzzling to me that we're jumping straight to an alien (to us) conference model, when there are proven hybrid conference models that exist within the larger (conference-driven) computer science community. ICALP (theory), SIGMOD, VLDB and ICDE (the top three database conferences), ICML and NIPS (the top machine learning conferences), KDD and SDM (the main data mining conferences), SOSP (the main OS conference), and (to a degree) SIGCOMM and INFOCOMM (networking) all have the following model:
  • A main research ``track'', with peer reviewed papers. Optionally, an ``industrial'' track for more applied work.
  • A set of workshops, for which topics are solicited via a call for proposals.
  • A set of tutorials, for which again topics are solicited via 5-page abstracts and reviewed. Panel discussions and demos (optionally)
The conference itself is a 5-day event, with research and industrial tracks, panels, and tutorials, all blended together  (workshops either bracket the conference, or are interleaved). I've been to many of the conferences listed above, and I can assert that I've met many people not originally of the community that attend because of these satellite events.

Other variants include limiting the number of actual talks, while still including all accepted papers in the proceedings  (the remainder of the papers are presented as posters). This opens up more time during the day for satellite events as well.

Note: I've begun noticing more tutorial events at STOC (STOC 2010 has a full day of these). This definitely is progress, although I believe that workshops draw more attendance. I also think it's important to solicit these from the community, rather than having the PC decide topics. Doing so both increases participation and increases the sense that the community is part of the whole conference.




Math meetings are fractured

I've never attended an AMS meeting myself, but from all accounts (and I have heard MANY), they are highly fractured. The meetings draw attendees from the spectrum of mathematical areas, but they all essentially group together in tiny miniconferences - I've heard numerous stories of multiple rooms in which the only people listening to a talk are the five other speakers and a few graduate students. This is not the way I want to see our flagship theory conference evolve.

People won't come

For better or for worse, we're used to the 'publish-attend-present' model of CS conferences, rather than the 'meet-greet-discuss' model of math/science conferences. I suspect that many people will not come to a STOC in which there is no proceedings and no real publication attached to the presentation (at least none that can go on a CV). There's nothing wrong with the model per se, but it's not something our community is comfortable with, and since other theory conferences won't go this route, I don't see how we'll ever get comfortable with it. 

Bottom Line

I applaud the idea of shaking things up in regard to the format for STOC. I just feel very strongly that we should learn  from other models that exist within the computer science community, rather than making a radical shift towards a
 model that's part of a very different framework for how the publishing/dissemination process works. I am unconvinced that the proposed model would solve the problem of attendance, and it has a good chance of making STOC entirely irrelevant.

Case Study in Large Theory Conferences: ICALP

Luca Aceto had posted a comment on my last post about STOC, describing his experiences running ICALP as a large theory conference. I thought it was fascinating, and requested that he repost a longer version on his blog. That post is here, and I strongly encourage anyone who's been involved in this discussion to go and read it... now....

I wanted to highlight a few snippets from it that I feel reinforce a number of points that I've been arguing.
ICALP is a three-track conference, and has been so since 2005, though typically only two tracks are running in parallel at each point in time. At ICALP 2008, in addition we had 12 satellite events, including the DYNAMO training school for doctoral students
Note that ICALP had an attendance range of about 500 - where we'd like STOC to be. It fits in with the pattern I was describing: more satellite events appears to correlate with larger attendance. 

As an aside, ICALP had Peter Winkler do a masterclass on math puzzles. Frankly, if we could just hire Peter Winkler and Persi Diaconis to do lectures at every STOC, our numbers would go into the stratosphere ;)
The workshops were held the day before ICALP or during the week-end following it. They were selected by the ICALP organizers amongst a fairly large number of proposals that we received in response to a call for workshops, based on their perceived scientific quality and on their potential interest to the ICALP community.
I've said this before, but I do think that if we go the route of having workshops/tutorials, the best way to do it is how other conferences do it: have a workshops chair solicit proposals, and decide from amongst them. The workshop organizers then take care of the work of getting speakers. It will ease the burden a lot.
I firmly believe that the task of organizing a conference like ICALP should be shared amongst several people. This certainly worked for us and helped us work more cheerfully, and overcome personal problems, mishaps and periods of crisis and panic that arose during the year before the conference took place
Very true. Again, most conferences that have lots of activities have a large organizing group, with proceedings chairs, arrangements chairs, workshop chairs, tutorial chairs, and so on. Apart from the fact that people's CVs get nicely bloated with service activities, more participation at the top level can actually help with overall attendance, as well as alleviating many of Michael's concerns (although technically he was more concerned with colocation, which is an idea I like, but does take more logistical coordination).

On acceptance rates and flagship conferences

There's been a lot of back and forth on ways of increasing attendance at STOC, and in our wonderful theory way, all of this has happened in a universe unencumbered by the presentation of actual data.

I thought I'd dig up statistics on what exactly goes on at a number of major conferences in different areas in computer science. My idea was to take some of the major areas in the field, identify their flagship conference (or one of two as the case may be), and compile statistics on acceptance rates, attendance, and general conference activities.

The areas I considered (with main conference in parentheses) were
  • databases (SIGMOD)
  • machine learning (ICML)
  • operating systems (SOSP)
  • networking (SIGCOMM)
  • architecture (ISCA)
  • graphics (SIGGRAPH)
and the results I got were interesting (all data that I compiled can be found in this spreadsheet: feel free to add other areas, or update numbers, as you see fit). Where I could, I tried to get a sense of attendance/acceptance rates from either asking people or looking at published numbers for recent years: the ACM DL has acceptance rates for many of the above. Information on conference activities were taken from the most recent year I could get data for (usually 2010 or 2009). The main points:
  1. All of the listed conferences had attendance in the 500-600 range (except ISCA with average attendance of 400, and SIGGRAPH with 2000+ in the research side). So they are definitely conferences with attendance that STOC would like to mimic. 
  2. Acceptance rates varied, but most were below 20% (ICML being the exception at 25%). STOC is at 28% or so
  3. Number of papers accepted varied widely (23 for SOSP, 150 for ICML). I find this particularly interesting: it would seem that attendance correlates more with the perception of being 'flagship' than the actual number of papers accepted.
  4. Most conferences had long lists of colocated workshops. The smallest number was SIGCOMM last year with 5, and others had many more. STOC had none.
  5. Tutorials were variable: some places had many (SIGGRAPH had 27) and some had none. STOC had 3.
  6. With the exception of ISCA last year, all the conferences had significant poster sessions, either consisting of all papers accepted, or as a separate track with many posters. STOC had none.
  7. The conferences all had other activities: demos, industrial tracks, works in progress or other such things (ISCA being the exception). STOC had none. 
  8. Durations varied between 4 and 6 days (including the initial day). Most had 5. STOC is 4.
To me, there are two things that stand out from this.
  1. The number of papers accepted does not appear to make a difference to the attendance. SOSP happens once every two years, and accepts 23-25 papers, and gets 500 attendees !! ICML gets a similar number of attendees with 150 papers accepted each year. 
  2. There are a TON of activities at these conferences. Indeed, I think ICALP and ESA match them in terms of level of activity, but certainly not STOC. I've been a proponent of satellite events around a conference to increase attendance, and the STOC/EC/CCC colocation does seem to have helped. I'm also intrigued by the idea of colocating SoCG with STOC. 
You may draw your own conclusions...

p.s for the legions of readers who will start protesting that these communities are much larger than the theory community, I will merely point out that almost no one in this discussion thinks that the theory community is 300 strong: the question is more about getting the rather large theory community to show up in force for STOC.

UpdateMichael Mitzenmacher has a post up listing specific logistical issues that come up with expanding the set of activities at a conference. He points out that if we decide to go to multiple satellite events (whether as separate events or whatever), we'll have to adjust to a much greater degree of organizational commitment up front, as well no small amount of 'attitude adjustment'. For anyone who's ever attended a business meeting, this is a scary thought :)

Aravind Srinivasan reminds us that the STOC early registration deadline is Apr 28 (only a week away!), so do go ahead and register.

Especially given the current economic climate, ACM is concerned about
getting enough registrants and booked hotel rooms for STOC.

This is particularly pertinent for me because I've been having similar conversations with ACM about SoCG 2010: they are generally concerned about attendance based on data from conferences being organized right now, and have been tamping down attendance estimates as a result.

STOC/FOCS/SODA: The Cage Match (with data!)

(Ed: This post, and the attendant web page and data, was initiated as a joint effort of Piotr Indyk and myself. Many others have helped improve the data, presentation and conclusions.)

Inspired by Michael Mitzenmacher's flamebait post on SODA/STOC/FOCS, we decided to roll up our sleeves, and resolve the biggest outstanding issue in Theoretical Computer Science, namely the great "STOC/FOCS vs. SODA" debate ("P vs. NP" is a tainted second, sullied by all that money being offered to solve it). We have some interesting preliminary observations, and there are many interesting problems left open by our work ;)

The hypothesis:
There is a significant difference in citation patterns between STOC/FOCS and SODA
The plan:

First, we obtained the list of titles of conference papers appearing in STOC, FOCS and SODA in the last 10 years (1997-2006). We deliberately excluded 2007 because FOCS hasn't happened yet. We got this list from DBLP (Note: DBLP does not make any distinction between actual papers and tutorials/invited articles; we decided to keep all titles because there weren't that many tutorials/invited papers in any case).

For each title, we extracted the citation count from Google Scholar, using a process that we henceforth refer to as "The Extractor". Life is too short to describe what "The Extractor" is. Suffices to say that its output, although not perfect, has been verified to be somewhat close to the true distribution (see below).

The results, and methodology, can be found at this link. The tables and graphs are quite self-explanatory. All source data used to generate the statistics are also available; you are welcome to download the data and make your own inferences. We'll be happy to post new results here and at the webpage.

OBSERVATIONS:

The main conclusion is that the hypothesis is valid: a systematic discrepancy between citation counts of SODA vs. STOC/FOCS does appear to exist. However, the discrepancy varies significantly over time, with years 1999-2001 experiencing the highest variations. It is interesting to note that 1999 was the the year when SODA introduced four parallel sessions as well as the short paper option.

Although most of the stats for STOC and FOCS are quite similar, there appears to be a discrepancy at the end of the tail. Specifically, the 5 highest citation counts per year for STOC (years 1997-2001) are all higher than the highest citation count for FOCS (year 2001). (Note: the highest cited STOC article in 2001 was Christos Papadimitriou's tutorial paper on algorithms and game theory). The variation between SODA and STOC/FOCS in the 1999-2001 range shows up here too, between STOC and FOCS themselves. So maybe it's just something weird going on these years. Who knows :)

Another interesting observation comes from separating the SODA cites into long and short paper groups (for the period 1999-2005). Plotting citations for short vs long papers separately indicates that the presence of short papers caused a net downward influence on SODA citation counts, but as fewer and fewer shorts were accepted, this influence decreased.

There are other observations we might make, especially in regard to what happens outside the peak citations, but for that we need more reliable data. Which brings us to the next point.

VALIDATION OF THE DATA:

To make sure that the output makes sense, we performed a few "checks and balances". In particular:
  • we sampled 10 random titles from each of FOCS, STOC and SODA for each of the 10 years, and for each title we checked the citation count by hand. Results: there were 7 mistakes in FOCS, 9 in STOC, and 11 in SODA, indicating a current error rate in the 9-10% range.
  • for each of FOCS, STOC, SODA, we verified (by hand) the values of the top 10 citation numbers, as reported by The Extractor
  • we compared our stats for the year 2000 with the stats obtained by Michael. The results are pretty close:

Warning: the data displayed here is KNOWN to contain errors (our estimate is that around 10% of citation counts are incorrect). We would very much appreciate any efforts to reduce the error rate. If you would like to help:
  1. choose a "random" conference/year pair (e.g., STOC 1997)
  2. check if this pair has been already claimed in this blog; if yes, go to (1)
  3. post a short message claiming your pair (e.g., "CLAIMING STOC 1997") on the blog.
  4. follow the links to check the citations. For each incorrect citation, provide two lines: (1) paper title (2) a Google Scholar link to the correct paper
  5. Email the file to Suresh Venkatasubramanian.
(and yes, we know that this algorithm has halting problems). Many thanks in advance. Of course, feel free to send us individual corrections as well.

Citation guidelines: The world of automatic citation engines is obviously quite messy, and sometimes it is not immediately clear what is the "right" citation count of a paper. The common "difficult case" is when you see several (e.g., conference and journal) versions of the same paper. In this case, our suggestion is that you ADD all the citation counts that you see, and send us the links to ALL the papers that you accounted for.

SODA vs STOC/FOCS

Michael Mitzenmacher has an interesting post up comparing citation counts for papers at SODA/STOC/FOCS 2000. The results are quite stunning (and SODA does not fare well). For a better comparison, we'd need more data of course, but this is a reasonable starting point.

As my (minor) contribution to this endeavour, here are the paper titles from 1997-2006 (last 10 years) for STOC, FOCS, and SODA. There might be errors: this was all done using this script. Someone more proficient in Ruby than I might try to hack this neat script written by Mark Reid for stemming and plotting keywords trends in ICML papers; something I've been hoping to do for STOC/FOCS/SODA papers.

If there are any Google researchers reading this, is there some relatively painless way using the Google API to return citation counts from Google Scholar ? In fact, if people were even willing to do blocks of 10 papers each, we might harness the distributed power of the community to get the citation counts ! If you're so inspired, email me stating which block of 10 (by line number, starting from 1) you're planning to do and for which conference. Don't let Michael's effort go in vain !

There are 681 titles from FOCS, 821 from STOC, and 1076 from SODA.

STOC 2007 Results out

Via Piotr, the STOC 2007 results are out. They are sneakily hidden on Uri Feige's home page, so if you go to the STOC page, you don't see them.

77 papers made it in: I don't know how many were submitted (Update: 312, quite a healthy number). As is often with STOC, the titles are somewhat inscrutable, so it's hard to spot papers that might be interesting.

Some notable entries:
  • Computing crossing number in linear time, by Ken-ichi Kawarabayashi and Bruce Reed:
    For a fixed k, they determine whether a graph can be drawn with crossing number at most k, and if so, construct such a drawing, all in time linear in n. This improves an earlier quadratic time algorithm of Grohe.
  • Combinatorial Complexity in o-Minimal Geometry, by Saugata Basu.
    A continuation of his work on estimating complexity of various topological quantities, for even more generally defined subsets of Rn.
  • Fourier meets Möbius: fast subset convolution, by Andreas Björklund, Thore Husfeldt, Petteri Kaski, Mikko Koivisto.
    An application of the Möbius transform, in a kind of generalization of the use of Fourier transforms, but for subset convolutions.
  • Lower Bounds for Randomized Read/Write Stream Algorithms, by Paul Beame, T. S. Jayram and Atri Rudra.
    This is another in a series of papers that I really must read, given how it reminds me of things I was dabbling in involving graphics cards. The quirk of this model is that the stream algorithm can write onto streams as well as reading from them; memory is limited, but not intermediate storage (for writing such streams)
Parochial concerns section: by my count, 6 geometry papers, which is fairly decent.
