The Importance of Operations Research

The Boston Globe has a careful and well thought out article by Virginia Postrel on the importance of operations research over the years. She finesses the tiresome theory-practice debates rather well, by describing how the theoretical development of the field was boosted by the emergence of large data sources on which to apply the field's arsenal of algorithms.

I found the following line hilarious:
"In some OR journals today, the only empirical data are, `Date of submission' and `date of acceptance."'
