you'd better believe it:...

From Melvin Durai's latest column:
Q: Your house, containing everything you own, catches fire. After saving your loved ones and pets, you have time to safely make a final dash to save any one item. What would it be?

A: That's easy: my Indian passport. If there's anything worse than watching your house on fire, it's spending a day at the Indian embassy. A friend of mine walked in with a full head of hair and walked out with a bald spot. I really felt bad for her.

  1. I've actually known people to whom this has happened. Person 1: Musician, saved his saxaphones. Person 2: Writer: saved his manuscript. Person 3: Student, saved a memento of her dead mother.

  3. I once lost my passport in the US (was on a very short visit). I got all the required documents in place (all via info on the embassy website) and went to the embassy in DC. The man there told me that the new passport will be ready in one week, and he even asked me if I wanted it earlier for some reason.

Well I cannot imagine such helpfulness in India, and kind of hope that when I have to renew my passport I am in the US!
